Acting Director of the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility
Timothy McCormally served as the 2017 chair of the Internal Revenue Service Advisory Council and is a distinguished tax lawyer and writer. He specializes in resolving tax controversies and promoting professionalism within the field. Before his current endeavors, McCormally was a director in the Washington National Tax practice of KPMG US, where he primarily collaborated with the Practice, Procedure & Administration group.
Earlier in his career, he held the roles of General Counsel and then Executive Director at Tax Executives Institute (TEI), a nonprofit association for in-house tax professionals. During his nearly three decades at TEI, McCormally was the editor of The Tax Executive magazine. He also wrote a regular column about taxes and association matters for 11 years and was responsible for overseeing the business, financial, and editorial aspects of both the publication and the institute itself.
McCormally's four-year tenure on the IRS Advisory Council included membership in the Large Business & International subgroup. He continues to focus on IRS procedures and rules that are especially relevant to large businesses and in-house tax professionals. His writings appear in esteemed publications such as Tax Adviser, Tax Notes, and Bloomberg BNA’s Daily Tax Report. Additionally, he is a frequent lecturer on topics like tax ethics, professionalism, and whistleblowing at educational programs across the country.
He is also a proud supporter and serves on the board of directors for the Greater DC Diaper Bank.
